We returned to Joe Wheeler State Park Marina today after an absence of 15 days. During that time we visited in Richmond, Virginia with George's sister and brother-in-law, Pat and Al, both on our north-bound drive, and then again when we were south-bound. We also entertained George's cousin, Ed, and his wife, Karen, who visited us from New Hampshire, saw a few friends, had doctor and dentist check-ups, checked up on Pat's mother, and had a family dinner with her and Pat's brother, Father Tony. On our drive north we also received word from Banana Bay Resort that they had a slip opening for us, so we decided to take this opportunity to spend the winter months in Marathon in the beautiful Florida Keys.
After today's 11 hour trip from Virginia, within an hour of our return to the boat we were included in a "Conch Republic" Party organized by "Loopers" who had already arrived for the American Great Loop Cruisers Association Rendezvous at the marina. At 5 p.m. conch shells were blown to signify the beginning of the pre-sunset party at the resort's pool. Many of the boats are headed to the Florida Keys as we are, so the party was a great celebration to begin our trip south. George even raised our own Conch Republic flag!
Unfortunately on our drive here today we received word that Pat's mother would have to go into the hospital to be treated with heavy antibiotics for a recurrence of cellulitis which she had contracted last spring. Hopefully, she will recover quickly from this bout.
