5/29/10 – Swansboro, North Carolina

You see everything on the I. C. W., including a house with a giraffe.

What not to paint your house.

We were on our way this morning at 7:35 a.m. in order to make the opening of the Wrightsville Beach Bridge, which only opens once an hour/on the hour. This was the first of four bridges we would encounter today which would only open at certain times. This forces the boater to really plan his speed and timing with precision. If you are late for an opening, your wait could cost you an hour of your trip, and if you are too early, you will have to waste fuel while idling, or anchor, if you can. Luckily, George is very good at figuring all this out, and we made our way through very smoothly.

By the time we arrived at Dudley’s Marina on the Waterway for fuel and dockage, there was lots of holiday boat traffic with their acompanying wakes as people traveled in and out of close-by Bogue Inlet. We did manage to tie up and to get fuel, but we were not thrilled with the bouncing at their face dock. In fact, one of our fenders got caught between the boat and a piling, and exploded! Later on, we did borrow their courtesy vehicle and made a quick trip with it to the grocery store to load up on a week’s provisions. We relaxed for the rest of the afternoon and evening, and luckily the boat traffic eventually died down.
